Women's Democracy Group writes to Andy Burnham on democratic renewal
By Elect Her
The Women's Democracy Group has written to Andy Burnham MP to set out why women's equal participation must be at the heart of any programme of democratic renewal.
As debates about the future of our democracy gather pace, there is an opportunity not only to rethink how power is exercised, but also who gets to participate in political life. While progress has been made, women continue to face significant barriers to standing for and serving in elected office. Without addressing those barriers, democratic renewal will remain incomplete.
In our letter, we argue that building a stronger democracy requires action on three fronts: creating a politics that is safe and respectful, modernising democratic institutions, and ensuring public office is genuinely open to everyone. We also highlight practical reforms that could help remove barriers to participation and strengthen public trust in our democratic institutions.
The Women's Democracy Group brings together Elect Her, The Jo Cox Foundation, the Fawcett Society, 50:50 Parliament, Centenary Action, Compassion in Politics and Shout Out UK. We also work alongside the Online Safety Act Network and the Electoral Reform Society. Together, we are working to ensure that women's representation is recognised as a central pillar of democratic renewal.
As we approach the centenary of equal franchise in 2028, we believe this is the moment to build a democracy that better reflects the people it serves. We look forward to continuing this conversation with political leaders across the country.
