Get Involved in the Elections

On Thursday 7th May, millions of voters will head to the polls for the Scottish Parliament, Welsh Senedd, English local government and mayoral elections. Make an impact in democracy and learn more about politics in the process by using our three easy toolkits below.

Demystifying Voting

Voting is the easiest way you can participate in democracy and have an effect on who represents you. Our Demystifying Voting toolkit covers who is eligible to vote, how to register, how to vote and how to decide who to vote for.

Can I Vote is also a great online tool for women who aren’t British citizens to understand which elections they are eligible to vote in.

Get Involved in the Election

Especially if you’re Just Getting Started or Ready to Get Involved in politics, then getting active in an election is a great way to understand more about political processes and shape political priorities before you’re ready to put yourself forward as a candidate. Our Get Involved in the Election toolkit covers how to volunteer with a campaign, influence your candidates and more.

See What Hustings are Happening in Your Area

Our friends at the Democracy Classroom have made a fantastic Hustings Locator that you can use to find any upcoming hustings in your local area. If you are running your own, you can complete the form linked below to have it added to their map, too.

Organise a Hustings

By asking questions of candidates ahead of an election and gaining their commitment to political pledges, you can influence political priorities for those in elected office. If you’re part of a campaign group, hustings are a great way to have your voices heard and ensure women’s needs and expertise are prioritised in politics.

Our How to Organise a Hustings Toolkit takes you through how to plan, promote and deliver your own hustings. We give you ideas for how to create an original and compelling event, as well as ensure candidates understand the key issues facing women in your local area today.

Ensure Your Influence Has Impact

Whether you plan to meet directly with your candidates, ask them questions at a hustings or to organise your own themed hustings, it’s important you know that any questions or pledges you bring to candidates are policy issues that they can change if elected. We’ve given some examples of different policy areas that devolved parliaments (Holyrood or Senedd) are responsible for, in comparison to Westminster or local governments (councils).

Learn What Experts Are Demanding

Read what the women’s and equalities’ sectors in Scotland and Wales are asking Holyrood or Senedd candidates respectively to commit to, and see if there’s any questions or pledges you want to incorporate when influencing candidates.
