Be a Councillor in Scotland

Start your journey towards becoming a councillor. Learn what councillors do, how to put yourself forward for selection and election and how to campaign ahead of the 2027 Scottish local elections.

If you are passionate about your local community, we need you! Only 35% of Scotland’s councillors are women, despite us making up 51% of the population. This is even lower for young women, with less than 15% of all councillors in Scotland being aged 18-44.

Councillors make a huge difference to the quality of life of local people and how local issues are dealt with. We need people from all backgrounds and experiences who reflect the communities they serve to put themselves forward for election.

You don’t need any certain qualifications or work experience to become a councillor, you just need to understand your local community and what they care about.

We’re inviting young women across Scotland to join our free online workshop where we will give you all the information you need to start your journey towards becoming a councillor. You’ll learn what councillors do, how to put yourself forward for selections, how to campaign, and what to expect in elected office. You’ll hear directly from current councillors in Scotland about how they first got involved in politics and what their experience has been like since, so you know what to expect as you set out on this exciting journey ahead. You will also meet a network of other women considering putting themselves forward in the 2027 Scottish local elections, because we’re stronger together.

This event is being delivered in partnership with the Young Women’s Movement.

Our Guest Speaker

Cllr Heather Woodbridge

Councillor Heather Woodbridge (Independent) is the Leader of the Orkney Islands Council and the youngest council leader in Scotland! She also represents the North Isles ward.

Elect Her is committed to hosting inclusive, accessible support that enable all women to engage fully in our conversations. We will make reasonable adjustments throughout the sessions, so there is universal access. Throughout our programme of support, we anticipate what is needed in advance and respond to needs as they emerge. If you require any further accommodations to access, please email community@elect-her.org.uk. Requests must be made at least 2 working days before the scheduled event in order to enable us time to make arrangements.
