What is inspiring in our politics right now? Aspiring community leaders, activists, and changemakers from across England coming together for our Be a Councillor Summit - a dynamic, day-long event dedicated to demystifying local politics and inspiring leaders to stand for council.

Our amazing team - particularly Rosie! - organised this awesome summit in partnership with Local Government Association (LGA), the Disability Policy Centre, 50:50 Parliament, The Migrant Democracy Project, The Politics Project, and Operation Black Vote.

Our Summit’s message was clear:

democracy is for everyone!

Participants heard from experienced councillors and campaigners who shared their lived experiences - from navigating identity and leadership to balancing personal commitments with public service.

“This summit gave me the confidence to stand for election.”

Attendee - and now Councillor Candidate!

Workshops explored the realities of being a councillor, offering insight into what the role involves, how to campaign effectively, and the personal and professional rewards of public service.

The panel discussions highlighted how local government can be a powerful tool for change when people from all walks of life are represented.

The sessions were intentionally inclusive - with space for honest conversation, peer learning, and inspiration.

It was a day of connection and practical insight!

The Be a Councillor Summit was designed not just to inform, but to equip people with the tools and networks needed to take the next step.

From the morning’s Lived Experience and Identity workshops, to the afternoon’s Political Progression clinics, participants left with tangible next steps and new connections across communities and political perspectives.

Between sessions, the energy in the room was unmistakable — lively networking, thoughtful discussion, and the shared belief that local politics should reflect local people.

The plenary session brought all attendees together in the council chamber — a powerful reminder of the democratic spaces that shape our communities. The panelists, including councillors and civic leaders, offered honest reflections on their journeys and advice for those considering taking the leap into public life.

The vibe of the day was optimistic, empowering, and with shared purpose!
