Support for Women of Colour

We create protected space for women with shared lived experience to come together.

All of our programmes are fully inclusive and supportive spaces, however we recognise the intersections at which some women’s identities sit and we create protected space for women with shared lived experience to come together.

As men are sometimes a barrier to women standing for elected office, sometimes white women are the barrier for Women of Colour. In acknowledgment of that, we run some workshops specifically for Women of Colour to explore their political futures and give space to conversations regarding stepping into elected office and how racism impacts the steps we take.

Superpowers

Entering the political arena is daunting and brave, and we want to do everything in our power to help you prepare for that moment. Superpowers is a transformational programme for Women of Colour to explore leadership, values, the power of the unconscious mind and ways to look after our mental health and wellbeing.

Many Women of Colour are overcoming multiple forms of trauma and traumatic incidents, and so part of this programme is focused on dealing with the stress and anxiety that results from trauma to help you best tackle what comes your way.

We know that Black, Asian and other ethic minority women face additional barriers when getting involved in politics. This programme will enable you to start deep and transformative inner work to help you best prepare for life as a leader.

Our next round of Superpowers will take place in Autumn 2024.

Through Superpowers, you will explore:

  • What are your values?

  • The power of the unconscious mind

    • How to raise confidence and anchor feelings of calm

    • How to engage an audience and have the power to influence anyone

  • Developing your leadership

    • How to use mindset and emotional management to build leadership skills

    • How to best build rapport with those around you

  • Wellbeing and managing trauma

    • How to overcome obstacles and deal with stress and context based anxiety

Throughout the programme, we will connect you with other Women of Colour, creating a safe space to discuss what you have learnt in the sessions and how you can move forward.

This programme is the only resource we organise that isn’t focused on progressing in politics directly: this programme is all about you, who you are and what you believe about yourself. When you know yourself deeply, you will be much better equipped to take on the adventure of political office!

I have reignited my interest in Scottish politics by joining Elect Her activities and I am much more optimistic about having a parliamentary career. I hope that in the future, I can become a political role model for BAME women across Scotland.”

A note on language: We are committed to creating a space for women for whom racism, prejudice and discrimination based on their ethnicity or religious beliefs may be a barrier in their political journeys. The term ‘Women of Colour’ could be interpreted as presenting women from minority ethnic backgrounds as a monolith and we know this is not the case; ultimately we are using this space to provide support to any woman who would benefit from seeking community with other women from similar intersecting identities and backgrounds.

I’m ready to get involved, where do I start?

If you’re a Woman of Colour and would like to connect with other women from ethnic minority backgrounds as you move forward on your political journey, register your details below to find out about our upcoming events and resources designed specifically for Women of Colour.
